There is currently an increasing trend towards environmentally friendly and lightweight materials in automotive and other transportation applications:
Natural fillers and reinforcements coming from the forestry and agricultural industries can be successfully integrated into polymers to lightweight and reduce the cost of automotive components. In this presentation, NRC will showcase some of its recent developments in the area of biocomposites for automotive interiors. Technological challenges related to the formulation, processing and properties of those materials will be discussed.
In a second part, we will present our most recent work on the stamping-forming technology available at NRC which can enable the manufacturing of structural polymer composites for automotive and aerospace applications in replacement of metals. Challenges and opportunities related to this process will be discussed.
